Remarks	Twelve species of the Japanese Scolytus are recognized. A new species, S. aomoriensis are described. A name S. betulae Niijima is placed in synonymy with S. chikisanii Niijima. A lecotype for S. chikisanii Niijima is designated. A key to all species, notes on geographical distribution, and host plants are included.
